The X-Stream fin from Mares is a brand new, adjustable, open footed scuba fin which is lightweight and comfortable with a new foot pocket and new blade construction for less turbulence in the water. The X-Stream is designed to provide a greater thrust throughout the water but with less effort and this is achieved by allowing the blade to maintain an optimal angle throughout the kicking cycle along with a channel thrust which, inspired by marine mammals, allows for great channeling of water compared to other fins of the same size.

The X Stream won the prestigious Red Dot product design award illustrating that it is a truly excellent product.

Features

  • Riddled foot pockets prevent water from entering the space between the bootie and the foot pocket which would normally create a parachute type drag. The perforations also make the foot pocket soft and flexible and means there is no longer a suction which can make doffing cumbersome.
  • OPB or optimized pivoting blade allows the blade to maintain an optimal angle throughout your kicking cycle. This provides a constant thrust which keeps fatigue to a minimum and provides fluid movement through the water.
  • Superchannel. The blade has been designed with a large, flexible central superchannel which propells water more efficiently down the fin blade instead of letting it spill over the sides for optimal performance and minimal diver effort.
  • Channel thrust is inspired by marine mammals and this new technology maximizes the channeling of water and moves a much greater amount of water compared to other fins. This results in greater thrusting power but with the same amount of effort.
  • ABS plus buckles allows quick opening and closing of the buckle even when wearing thick neoprene gloves. The double button release prevents the buckle from accidentally opening making it really user friendly.
  • Open foot pocket provides maximum power and evenly distributes pressure over the foot to minimize tiredness. Internal ribbing inside the foot pocket improves fit and prevents foot suction and flexing of the foot pocket whilst transmitting great power to the blade.
  • Tri Material construction provides superior performance, maximum elasticity, great durability and a resistance to aging.

FeatureProduct Specification
Blade Type
?
Advances in design, materials and manufacturing techniques has allowed the development of various differenet types of fin blades which control the movement of water in different ways.

More advanced blades, including split and hinged blades, can dramatically increase efficiency, helping to improve propulsion but also lower the amount of energy required to operate the fins. Close.

Foot Type
?
Fins are available in two fitting types, open heel and full foot pocket.

Open Heel are typically used for scuba diving as they are able to provide better propulsion due to their increased strength and weight.

Full Foot Pocket fins are usually worn by snorkellers who produce significantly less drag when moving through the water compared to a scuba diver. As a result the fins are generally smaller and much lighter. Close.
Open Heel
Quick Release Buckle
?
Quick release buckles aid fitting and removal of the fins by allowing rapid fitting and release of the fin strap.

Rather than having to loosen the fin strap off before pulling it over your heel to remove the fin, the quick release buckle allows you to disconnect the strap and slide your foot straight out. Close.

Strap Type
?
A number of different fin strap styles can now by found on fins including the traditional adjustable rubber strap, metal spring straps and also bungee straps.

Rubber straps can be easily adjusted to suit each individual diver and are typically fitted with quick release buckles.

Spring and bungee straps are generally not adjustable and are sized to suit the fin size, however, they offer an extra level of comfort and flex better during the kick motion. Close.

Doesn’t last

The fin in the water is great, however after diving with it for 20 dives, on my 21st dive the material on both fins split. They have been looked after very well and I’m highly disappointed that the join between the soft silicone in the scoop section easily tears away from the harder silicone ridges. Would no longer recommend this fin to my students at all. I’ve heard from several other people this happening also.

I bought a pair of these fins in 2012 to use on holiday and given how light they are I would only use them for holiday / warm water diving and not UK drysuit / lake / shore / boat diving. They are very light weight but excellent fins and, 3 years
