In this week’s ScubaTube Mark and Shaun talk about the largest marine protection area, divers stealing bronze guns, development for HMS Britannic, the Tanaroa is being sunk, a new ghost fleet has been discovered, sharks predicting the presidential race and lastly this week’s YouTube Picks.
Delegates from 24 countries and the EU have all agreed that the Ross Sea in Antarctica will the world’s largest marine protection area or MPA. The site is 600,00 square miles and will be protected from commercial fish for the next 35 years. The reason why the Ross Sea was chosen was a simple one, it’s home to 38% of the world’s Adelie penguins, 30% of Antarctic petrels and 6% of Minke whales. This move will also ensure the growth of krill which is seen as food to lots of whales and seals and is a key ingredient for salmon farming. The area will also been known as a “no-take zone” this means nothing can be removed including marine life and minerals.
Divers have removed a bronze gun that was part of a shipwreck on the Dunwick bank. The ship sank off the Suffolk coast around 500 years ago and due to this latest theft it has been put the site “at risk”. One diver called Stuart Bacon has been fighting to get the site recognised by officials and due to the missing bronze gun he was finally heard. But the problem doesn’t stop there. The site might be at risk but no one is doing anything about it due to its location. The wreck sits in a very hostile area due to the sediment in the water it’s very hard to see you have to rely on touch and sound.
The Britannic (which has been dubbed Titanic 2) is inline for an update. Yiannis Tsavelakos (a diving guide) has come up with a genius plan to link the Britannic with other ship wrecks in the area to create a type of theme park for divers. The wreck sits in the Kea Channel in Greece where diving is popular but the new idea for a theme park will attract even more divers to this beautiful site. But don’t think for one minute that it’s just one man doing this. Grecian authorities have had meetings with historians, diving experts, oceanographers and even the relatives of the crew to discuss the future of this theme park.
The USS Zuni started its life in the battle of Iwo Jima where it’s main job was to tow torpedoed warships to safety. After the war the ship renamed the Tameroa and served the coast guard. The Tamaeroa was a key ship in the rescue of 7 people in the “perfect storm” it over came 40 foot high waves off the New England coast. But sadly father time hasn’t been to good to her. The ship was at first to become a wartime museum but four years ago her hull sprung a leak cause lots of damage to key parts of the ship. So then it was decided that she would be sunk. She will be joining the 25 mile long reef off New Jersey (south of Cape May Point) aiding the $1.7 billion fishing industry as well as giving divers another wreck to discover in New Jersey.
Over 40 ancient shipwrecks have been found on the bed of the black sea. A team called Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (better know as Black Sea MAP) have been combing 1,800 metres below the waters surface when they came into contact with the fleet. The wrecks are from the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires and are in brilliant condition due to the lack of oxygen in the water. They now plan to study the wrecks using 3D imagery.
With the death of Paul the octopus last year the responsibility of picking the next president of America has now fallen on two Mako sharks. The Clinton Shark “swimming stronger together” and the Trump Shark “mako America great again” have been tracked by the Nova Southeastern University (NSU). Who ever swims the furthest will become the next president of America. They are being lived tracked at all times with a live feed going up on the NSU website.
