The Ibiza Council, the local tourism body, was presented the honour by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). The holiday destination has a host of stunning undersea locations for scuba divers and snorkelling enthusiasts to explore. Among these are the Posidonia meadows, which were declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1999, as well as the protected marine areas of Sa Pedrera. Seabeds off the coast of Ses Margalides, Es Vedranell and Isles Bledes also have wide ecological diversity and offer plenty of undersea adventure opportunities. Divers can also explore wreckage of the Don Pedro, a merchant cargo ship that sunk off Ibiza’s main port in 2007. Diving centres at Punta Dive and Vellmari Europe, which offer a host of training courses for scuba enthusiasts of all levels, received a special mention from PADI.
