Creepiest Places in the Ocean

Do you love scary movies? Does being scared excite you? If you’re a diver then you’re in luck! The ocean hides some of the most eerie places in the world you wouldn’t want to visit. Below are five of the weirdest, most unique and creepiest places underwater. Read on if you dare…

CANCUN UNDERWATER MUSEUM IN MEXICO
This dive site is home to more than 470 life sized sculptures. These fascinating statues were sculpted by Jason deCaires Taylor who is also an avid diver. Although the art is truly a wonder to view it is also incredibly eerie. Some of the sculptures have grown algae, distorting their features and giving them an unnerving appearance.

TURTLE TOMB, SIPADAN IN MALAYSIA

Delve into the dark cave system and manoeuvre through winding passageways with many leading to dead ends. As you travel down 200m from the entrance you’ll find a watery tomb. Inside is the resting place of hundreds of turtles and even dolphins. The skulls and shells of turtles are scattered on the floor of the cave. Please note that only experienced cave divers should attempt this.

NEPTUNE MEMORIAL REEF, FLORIDA
This memorial located off Miami Florida is the largest man-made reef ever created. This underwater cemetery is the resting place of many people. Their ashes are combined with sand, cement and water to create their very own sculpture. This means that you are actually swimming among the dead. However when there is death, there is life. It has been revealed that life around the site has jumped from zero to thousands. This reef is home to species of fish and coral, which were thought to be extinct.

SALEM EXPRESS, RED SEA
In 1991 the passenger ship Salem Express collided with the Hyndman Reefs causing the bow to blow open. It is thought that almost 500 people lost their lives. Although many of the bodies were recovered some were left in their watery grave. As you explore the ship you will discover that many of the of the items on board are in surprisingly good condition. You can see children’s toys, luggage, cars and two un-deployed lifeboats. However many divers choose not to dive this site out of respect.

CHUUK LAGOON, CENTRAL PACIFIC

Beneath the beautiful crystal blue waters in the Central Pacific lies an underwater graveyard. This submerged museum is the resting place of 60 ships, 275 aircraft and human remains. In 1944 Allies launched a full-scale attack on a Japanese base called Operation Hailstone where 3,000 people lost their lives. This makes it the largest maritime war graveyard in the world. The site was left undisturbed for over 25 years due to the risk of detonating unexploded bombs. Tanks, cars, mines and motorcycles litter the ocean floor in this haunted dive site.     Have you had a chance to dive any of these creepy dive sites? Or do you know any more eerie underwater places?
