3mm men's wetsuits are ideal for diving and snorkelling in water temperatures above 19°C or 67°F but offer more than just thermal protection, being a full length suit they offer protection from scratches and abrasions too. Remember the temperature guide is just that and some individual may want a thicker suit if they are susceptible to the cold. Base your suit on the water temperature at the depth you will diving at not necessary the surface temperature, sometimes on deeper dives the water temperature at depth can be up to 5°C below that at the surface. A great way to increase the warmth of your 3mm suit is to wear a rash vest underneath; this simple layering principle increases your warmth. An often overlooked benefit of a full length suit is the sun protection it gives you if you are snorkelling at the surface. Unlike supermarket purchased wetsuits these suits are made from neoprene designed for diving which don't compress drastically at depth thus keeping you warmer and lasting for years rather than just a summer. These suits do not tend to have zips as the neoprene is soft enough to easily stretch over hands and feet. After a day's diving the suit should be washed in fresh water and dried out of direct sunlight. See our kit advice pages for more information on selecting a suit.
