this is my 3rd strobe light the first one was a solas/uscg approved and claimed to be water proof (that lasted about a month of white water kayaking before fizzling out) the second one was aimed at divers and of the same design as the mares but with a filament bulb instead of LED (that started randomly firing off whilst i was standing in the queue in the fish and chip shop in my village if it wasn't bad enough that i was in full kayaking kit dripping on the floor with pond weed in my hair now every one around me was blind. it died later that night) the mares strobe seems to be very high quality and is standing the abuse i give it well no signs of leaking in the pressure of a white water capsize. when paddling in the dark the led torch is bright enough to stop an angered attacking swan in its tracks and the strobe makes you very hard to miss. i have also found that some brands of strobe let off a high pitched hum as they charge, whilst its reasuring to know the light is working with out having to look directly at it and nuke your retinas, an unfortunate side affect is that they seem to attract bats that attempt to mate with the strobe (this can be quite annoying). the mares dose not suffer from this as it emits only a quiet click.the mares strobe has a very sturdy feel to it and with the big ring switch is easy to use with gloved hands... it just feels like some one though about it when they designed it
